Safeguarding and e-safety

SAFEGUARDING AT MARLCLIFFE PRIMARY

At school we have a statutory duty to: “Safeguard and promote the welfare of children”

This means:

• Protecting children from maltreatment;

• Preventing impairment of children’s health or development;

• Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care;

• Undertaking that role so as to enable those children to have optimum life chances and to enter adulthood successfully.

‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’, DCSF 2010

At Marlcliffe we put children at the heart of all we do. All staff have a duty of care for the children; sometimes we see things that give us cause for concern or a child may ask us for help. We will contact parents if we have concerns about their child’s welfare and ask them to come into school to discuss them. We may be able to offer support in school or we can help parents / carers to access support from the local Multi-Agency Support Team (MAST.) If we have more serious concerns we will inform parents and refer the case onto social care.

We talk to the children about safety as part of our curriculum and older children are introduced to the work of Childline. We hope that all the children feel able to talk to adults in school if there is anything they are worried about.

E-SAFETY ~ ICT including the internet, email and mobile technologies have an important role in learning in our school. We expect all children to be safe and responsible when using ICT. We teach children about e-safety as part of the curriculum and in assemblies. This includes the possible dangers of social networking sites and how to use these with secure settings as well as an understanding of cyber-bullying.
