We have reached the end of our third season entering the Sheffield Primary Schools Cross-Country League, and it’s been another really exciting series of races. I would like to say a massive ‘well done’ to all the children who have taken part (and a a big ‘thank you’ to the parents who have come along to support). You have represented the school superbly, and have done your best even when the weather has been appalling! Check out the photos to see how muddy we got at the recent City Championships at Graves Park….

Here’s what some of our children had to say about cross country:

“I like cross country because it’s challenging and you get muddy!” - Iolanthe

“The first cross country run is in September. The run can be quite difficult but you get lots of support. When you enter the park you see lots of flags, including the red Marlcliffe flag. I have completed all 8 of the races, and you do relays last. My favourite race was at Longley Park, when I came 15th!” - Nyree

I want to make special mention of a few of our Y6 children, who have been part of the team since we first started entering this competition 3 years ago. Joe, Hollie, Lola, Martha and Jonah have been fantastic competitors, and they have all improved in their running. They have been a real encouragement and inspiration to the younger children. I hope that our current Y5, 4 and 3s can step up! I know we’ve got some talented runners waiting in the wings….

Finally, I am proud to say that we have a City Champion - Jonah won the aforementioned race at Graves Park on 10th March. He received a trophy, a medal, a year’s free membership of Hallamshire Harriers running club and a massive cheer from the Marlcliffe faithful!

If you’re interested in taking part in the future (Sept-Mar), please speak to me in school. I will be starting the weekly training groups again after Easter, so look out for a letter in due course.
